Surviving Hurricane Helene: A Personal Account

Published on 19 March 2025 at 00:38

I have not written a blog post since Hurricane Helene. On September 27, 2024, a storm moved across our state and several other states. The power went out after midnight. The wind howled and beat against the back of our home. I looked out the window but could not see what was going on. We finally tried to sleep once it slowed down. My husband was at work during the storm.

The next morning, the aftermath was wild. My husband had an obstacle course to get through to get home to us. Timber had been cut in the weeks leading up to the storm, resulting in fewer trees than usual. Still, we lost trees on the property. We lost four pine trees in our front yard near the road. My mom lost all four cedar trees in her front yard. It was a complete mess everywhere. We had roof damage, and other houses on the property also had damaged roofs. Our power was out for sixteen days. We relied on each other up on the hill to get through it. We had generators, but it was not the same. The cell service was spotty, and computer access was impossible. We were outside more and enjoyed slow moments, so it was not all terrible. For a short time, it was a very different way of living. We were incredibly grateful when our power was restored. After six months there are still signs of where the storm ripped through our state. Others, such as North Carolina, are still struggling to get back to normal.

Despite the storm, we were all safe. I am truly thankful!
