Devotional - Matthew 23:37 NLT

Published on 15 April 2025 at 22:18

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me." (Matthew 23:37 NLT)

Devotional:

In Matthew 23:37, Jesus expresses deep sorrow over Jerusalem, a city that repeatedly rejected God’s messengers. His heart yearns to gather and protect its people, much like a mother hen shelters her chicks. This imagery reveals God’s tender love and desire for His people to find safety and peace in Him.

Yet, the verse also highlights a painful truth: God’s love is freely offered, but it requires our willingness to accept it. The people of Jerusalem chose their way, rejecting the very protection and love they so desperately needed.

Today, this scripture reminds us of God’s persistent love for us. He longs to shield us, guide us, and provide for us. But like the people of Jerusalem, we have a choice. Will we run to Him, or will we turn away?

Reflection:

  • How have I resisted God’s love and protection in my life?
  • In what areas do I need to surrender and allow God to gather me under His wings?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unchanging love and desire to protect us. Help us recognize the times when we have turned away and choose Your loving embrace instead. Teach us to trust in You completely, knowing that under Your wings we will find true safety and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
