1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.

2 He lifted me out of the dirty pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock.

and gave me a firm place to stand.

In these two verses from Psalm 40, the Psalmist meditates on his desire for God's presence and gratitude for His deliverance. The Psalmist says that he waited patiently for the Lord, knowing He would hear their cry. His circumstance is described in detail and clearly. He describes himself as stuck in a dirty pit, covered in mud and mire.

However, the Psalmist is relieved that God has not forgotten him. His feet are set on a rock, and the Lord lifts him from this difficult situation. This symbolic action represents steadfastness and strength. The Psalmist understands that God has provided him with a firm place to stand. This is a place where he can lean on Him and find support.
